Introduction to Long Range Rifle

This course is designed to teach the core skills required to effectively engage targets at an extended distance with a precision rifle.  The student will be immersed in all the technical aspects of weapon and scope set up, understanding of key fundamentals to consistently delivering precise fire and methods of reading the environment. This course will be taught by members of Law Enforcement and the Special Operations Community.

*This course may require some moderate physical activity.

Topics Discussed

Core topics that will be covered include:

  • Understanding the scope and rifle
  • Fitting the rifle
  • Precision rifle cleaning
  • Introduction to units of measurement
  • Ballistics and reading wind
  • Use of the Kestrel 5700 (Kestrels will be issued for those that do not have one)
  • Fundamentals of shooting a precision rifle and rapid bolt manipulation
  • Working with a spotter
  • Basic use of a ballistic program
  • Engagement of targets at intermediate and long ranges

Firearms Requirements:

  • Precision rifle, bolt action or semi auto (capable of shooting a 5 round group of 1 inch or less at 100 yards) in 5.56mm or greater with bipod (must have cant built in)
  • Once piece cleaning rod, bore guide and cleaning equipment (patches and jag)
  • Squeeze bag for stock
  • Spotting Scope and Tripod
  • Kestrel windmeter (if you do not have one, we will have Kestrel 5700 windmeters for students to use)

Not required but suggested

  • Range Finder

Students must provide their own rifles.  There will be no rental weapons.


Ammunition Requirements:

  • 200 rounds match ammunition

Gear Requirements:

  • Hearing Protection
  • Eye Protection
  • Knee Pads
  • Hat
  • Sunscreen
  • Bug Spray
  • Boots / Hiking Shoes
  • Water Bottle
  • Clothing Appropriate for conditions
  • Lunch/ snacks   note: water and Gatorade will be provided
  • Knee/ elbow pads or shooting mat

What does the cost of registration cover?

Cost will cover the course only. The student is responsible for costs associated with travel, lodging, meals (unless otherwise indicated), firearms (unless a loaner is requested), ammunition, and personal gear.

Do I need a background check to attend training?

Yes, unless you have a current state issued concealed carry permit.

*If so, then you will need to upload a copy of your permit and driver’s license during registration in lieu of a background check.

I don’t have a concealed carry permit. How do I obtain a background check?

Sentry Link offers a National Criminal Background Check for a fee of $19.95 per report.

Once the report is obtained send the report to training@iwi.us to have it included with your registration packet. You can send the report via the “Share” button.

How do I pay for the course?

During the registration process, you will be asked to enter your payment information or voucher code in order to pay for the course. This payment is required to hold your place in the course due to class limits and the management of student / instructor ratios. Cost covers the course only (unless otherwise indicated). Students are responsible for costs associated with travel, lodging, meals, firearms (unless a loaner is requested), ammunition, and personal gear.

Refund/Reschedule Policy:

  • Cancellations: If you cancel no later than 30 days prior to the start of your course, your payment can be applied to a future course for up to one year. If you cancel within 30 days of your course start date, your payment is non-refundable. However, that balance may be applied to another course within one year.
  • Refunds: You can receive a full refund up to 30 days prior to the start of your course. Any amount over $250 is fully transferable or refundable if you cannot make the class for any reason, with or without notice.
  • Re-Schedules: You can reschedule up to 2 times without penalty. After that you are no longer eligible to transfer your payment to a future course and forfeit your refund.
